ATLANTA, Georgia, March 18, 2022 –The Atlanta University Center (AUC) Robert W. Woodruff Library is honored to receive the Black Women in Radio (BWIR) Historic Collection and Oral History project curated by BWIR Founder, Educator and radio veteran Felèsha Love.

The inaugural collection celebrates the careers and legacies of 30 radio luminaries, including Founder and Chairperson of Urban One Cathy Hughes, Media Icon Dyana Williams, and Syndicated Radio Personalities Angela Yee, DeDe McGuire and Jasmine Sanders. Atlanta radio veterans Carol Blackmon, Joyce Littel, Rashan Ali and Rene Miller are also among the distinguished 30. Hundreds of hours of audio, video, interviews, photos and precious mementos were donated to offer an intimate lens at both the struggles and triumphs of Black women in radio and media. Additionally, a special oral history section was curated to benefit students and scholars in multi-disciplinary education.

“The BWIR collection is an integral part of preserving the history and significant contributions of minority women in radio,” says Loretta Parham, CEO and Library Director, AUC Woodruff Library. “Love’s work provides the Atlanta University Center and scholars around the globe with access to primary-sourced materials for learning and research. It is a welcomed addition to the Library’s Archives Research Center.”

“When I developed BWIR five years ago, I set out to create a platform to celebrate career contributions of my peers and amplify their voices, but that wasn’t enough,” shares Love. “I wanted to significantly change the trajectory of how we are viewed. Thanks to a partnership with the Library of Congress’ Radio Preservation Task Force (RPTF) and the AUC Woodruff Library, the collection has a home and legacy to build upon for many years to come.”

The collection will be processed and digitized by AUC Woodruff Library staff over the next several months. Access to the collection is forthcoming.
